After spending decades behind the drum kit, making waves in Montreal’s music scene, Chris Stewart (a.k.a. Stew) has stepped into the spotlight with a fresh sound and a brand-new solo project. Starting as a drummer at an early age, Stew has been a driving force in the live music world since 1991, playing with bands like SoundCorps, Trip The Off, The Mahones, and The Peelers. But the pandemic sparked a new chapter, at 49, Stew picked up a guitar and began writing original material.
Armed with just a microphone, a guitar, and a kick drum, his solo performances draw from a rich blend of Americana, folk, rockabilly, and punk. Stew’s solo shows combine raw, heartfelt originals with inventive covers. His unique re-imagining of The Clash’s music in the style of Johnny Cash, as frontman for Johnny Clash, demonstrates the genre-bending creativity that defines his work. Now, with his debut album; The Heads, The Hearts, The Tales, on the horizon, soon to be recorded with the group ‘Devil’s Cut Syndicate’ (featuring members of Johnny Clash and others), Stew is ready to bring his stories and sound to the forefront.
Drawing inspiration from legends like Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, and Bruce Springsteen, Stew’s sound has a timeless, gritty edge, with the attitude and urgency of The Clash. Whether he’s playing originals or covers, Stew delivers songs that hit hard and stay true to the roots of authentic, high-energy rock and roll.
